Commissioner's Message - April 2012
Thank you for voting! I am grateful to everyone in District IV who participated in the March 13, 2012, municipal election. I will continue to bring your voice to City government. Congratulations are extended to Mayor Seiler and Commissioners Roberts and Rodstrom, who have all been reelected. Because Commissioner DuBose was unopposed, the incumbent team remains to serve for the next three years, finding creative solutions to the issues we face.
The Homeless and Panhandlers – Our Police Department has been conducting regular sweeps downtown in Stranahan Park and the vicinity to help address any illegal activity occurring there. On March 6th, we approved a new public education initiative, urging people to donate money not to the individual but to agencies that help the homeless. These agencies include First Call for Help of Broward County, Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc., and United Way of Broward County. For more information, see www.fortlauderdale.gov/give/index.htm.
Crime Meetings – These monthly meetings have been temporarily suspended to give our Police Department time to address specific neighborhood issues. Please complete and submit the “Importance Scale Survey” at http://www.fortlauderdale.gov/YNYCYP/sector_meetings.htm. When the page opens, you can download the survey, so you and your neighbors can tell the Police Department which topics are the most critical in your area. This way, future crime meetings can be better suited to the needs of your neighborhood.
FDOT Construction – Regarding the US 1 / Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Roadway Project, FDOT has warned the contractor, the DeMoya Group, three times it wasn't meeting standards for submitting progress schedules. These FDOT warnings can lead to a “deficiency letter,” which can affect a contractor’s ability to get future jobs from the Department. DeMoya has vowed to redouble its efforts and get the project back on track and completed by the end of July. Ms. Miranda Iglesias is FDOT's Public Information Officer. She can be reached at 954-940-7585 (office), 954-218-2955 (cell), or e-mail

Closure of South Perimeter Road – In preparation for the South Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport (FLL), the Broward County Aviation Dept. will temporarily close the south entrance to the airport at the intersection of Griffin & Perimeter Roads. • A 1.7-mile section of Perimeter Road will close from SW 43rd Street on the west side of the airport to the roundabout on the east side of the airport. This section of road will close to all vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. Access to the west side of the airport is available through Ravenswood Road and Lee Wagener Boulevard. • This section of road is expected to remain closed from mid-March 2012 through completion of runway construction at the end of 2014. • Road closure is needed to prepare for the bridge structure, as part of the runway expansion that will extend over Perimeter Road, the Florida East Coast Railway & US 1. • For updates on airport programs and services, follow FLL on twitter.com/fllflyer, or visit www.fll.net.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season is Upon Us! It runs from March 1st through October 31st. Sea turtles are protected under the United States Endangered Species Act of 1973 and Florida Statutes Chapter 370.12, the Marine Turtle Protection Act. These laws provide, “No person may take, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture or attempt to engage in any such conduct to marine turtles, turtle nests, and/or turtle eggs.” Violators may be subject to civil and / or criminal penalties. If you see someone handling a sea turtle or poaching a nest, please call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922). • Also, the City of Fort Lauderdale adopted Chapter 6, Article III. - Sea Turtles, Code of Ordinances, to help protect threatened and endangered sea turtles that nest and hatch on our beach. For more information, there’s a link on the City’s home page under Announcements.
Don’t Forget! The Air Show Returns on April 28th and 29th! The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the inaugural Lauderdale Air Show over the ocean on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The four-hour line-up of some of the nation’s best military and civilian acts will be the first in South Florida in five years. For more info, see http://lauderdaleairshow.com.
