August 2010 - 'This Month' in Harbor Beach!
from The Harbor Beach Property Homeowners Association, Inc.
August brings us our annual "H-trifecta"...Heat...Humidity...and we dare not say it out loud, Hurricanes.
It's time to take a few minutes to do your Storm Preparedness Check. Do you have an evacuation plan for you and your family including your pets? Be reminded, we live in a Mandatory Evacuation zone including a Category One storm and if you stay behind there will be no one to help you should you need it. Bring or secure in all loose outdoor items such as furniture, grills, planters, umbrellas, etc. Check your dock lines and securely tie your boat off. Plan on having enough batteries, food, water and necessary medications (including wine!) for three days minimum. Easy to take the time now so to avoid the panicked Publix crowds later.
FPL recently came through the neighborhood and did a "Storm Trim" of vegetation in advance of any bad weather. Another positive for the undergrounding of our utilities would be the reduction of such aggressive and unsightly cutting of our beautiful and mature tree canopy.
Harbor Beach Goes Organic!
While on the subject of vegetation, Harbor Beach is cleaning up our act and going Green!
Many of you have expressed health and waterway concerns due to the overwhelming amount of recent information released from National studies about the toxic and potentially cancer causing effects of synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. To that respect Harbor Beach has decided to make a change for the health and safety of our residents. HB common areas will now be treated organically.
Synthetic fertilizers contain many hazardous materials that contribute to environmental pollution. This is caused by promoting the growth of algae blooms that deplete bodies of water of oxygen through a process called eutrophication which then leads to dead zones called hypoxia. Pesticides can be better defined as biocides as they can affect everything living that comes into contact with them, humans included. As well, they are up to ten times more toxic to children and pets due to their close proximity to the ground and more fragile immune systems. Is it any wonder the rise in cancer found in children and pets in recent years?
After an extensive search we found Green Acres Organics, LLC fit the bill to bring us greener. Green Acres Organics is an organic lawn and garden treatment service that specializes in natural organic fertilization, soil enhancement, and safe and effective alternatives to pesticides. Local franchise owner operator Andrew Boshears is a Florida Master Gardener and a 6 year Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He is very knowledgeable and encourages anyone curious about organic landscape and gardens to give him a call at 888-312-GREEN (4733) or at greenacresorganics@gmail.com. You can also check out his website at www.greenacresorganics.com.
Harbor Beach hopes to raise the bar for other waterfront neighborhoods in protecting the health and safety of our famous Waterways and more importantly of our future generations.
